How To Measure For Your Replacement Drawer Box

When You Do NOT Have The Drawer

The Information Below Shows How To Measure When The Drawer Box Is Missing Or Cannot Be Measured

Measure The Opening Height

Measure Your Opening Height
Measure From The Top Of The Drawer Opening To The Bottom Of The Drawer Opening

Measure The Opening Width

Measure Your Opening Width
Measure From One Side Of The Drawer Opening To The Opposite Side Of The Drawer Opening
(NOTE: If Drawer Slides Are Installed, In The Opening, DO NOT Measure Between Them.  Treat Your Measurement As If The Drawer Slides Are Not There.)

Measure The Cabinet Depth

Measure Your Cabinet Depth
Measure From The Back Wall Of The Cabinet To The Front Face Edge Of The Cabinet
(NOTE: If You Have "Inset" Doors & Drawer Fronts(Drawer Fronts/Facing Are SMALLER Than The Opening & Fit INSIDE The Opening),  Subtract The Thickness Of Your Drawer Front/Facing From Your Cabinet Depth)

Save These Dimensions And Consider Your Slides...
Note: QuikDrawers.com Will Do Custom Widths & Depths In 1/16" Increments, However Our Height Options Are Limited.
Account For Your Slides
Considerations That MUST Be Made Regarding Your Drawer Slide Hardware
The Information Below Is Based On "Overlay" Style Drawer Fronts, In General.
Please Notice "Special Consideration For "Inset" Drawer Fronts", In The Information Below, To Understand Considerations For "Inset" Style Drawer Box Sizing.
"Overlay" Style Drawer Fronts - Drawer Front Is Larger Than The Drawer Opening & Sets Against The Face Of The Cabinet, Covering The Drawer Opening
"Inset" Style Drawer Fronts - Drawer Front Is Smaller Than The Drawer Opening & Fits INSIDE The Drawer Opening Of The Cabinet Face

Concealed Undermount Slides

Requires "Notching For Slides" : YES

Drawer Box Width
**For 5/8" Thick Drawer Side Material**
(QuikDrawers "Solid Wood Dovetail Drawers")
With 5/8"(.625) Thick Drawer Side Material, Common "Concealed Undermount" Slides Require 3/16"(.1875) Of Clearance On Each Side Of The Drawer Box.

So The Simple Math Is:
Subtract 3/8"(.375) From Your Cabinet Opening Width
Example:
Opening Width = 15"
15" Minus 3/8"(.375) = 14 5/8"(14.625)w

(This Dimension Is Your Finished Drawer Box Width & The Dimension You Will Order)

**For 1/2" Thick Drawer Side Material**
(QuikDrawers "Baltic Birch Plywood Dovetail Drawers")
With 1/2"(.5) Thick Drawer Side Material, Common "Concealed Undermount" Slides Require 5/16"(.3125) Of Clearance On Each Side Of The Drawer Box.

So The Simple Math Is:
Subtract 5/8"(.625) From Your Cabinet Opening Width
Example:
Opening Width = 15"
15" Minus 5/8"(.625) = 14 3/8"(14.375)w

(This Dimension Is Your Finished Drawer Box Width & The Dimension You Will Order)

Drawer Box Depth
Determined By Length Of Slide
IMPORTANT NOTE:

Most Modern "Concealed Undermout" Slides TYPICALLY Have A Physical/Actual Length That Is Approximately 1/2"(.5) Longer Than They Are Advertised.
When Using "Rear Mounting Brackets" The Physical/Actual Length Is Approximately 7/8"(.875) Longer Than They Are Advertised, When The "Rear Mounting Bracket" Is Fully Collapsed.
Keep This In Mind When Determining Your "Concealed Undermount" Slide Length & Therefore Your Drawer Box Depth (Front To Back), As
Your Drawer Box Depth MUST Be Equal To The ADVERTISED Slide Length.

To Maximize Your Drawer Box Footprint/Size:
Find Your Cabinet Interior Depth, Then Consider Your "Concealed Undermount" Slide Length.

Most Modern "Concealed Undermount" Slides Are Only Available In 3" Length Increments. (12", 15", 18", 21", Etc..)

Because Of How The Slide Attaches To The Drawer Box, Your Drawer Box Depth (Front To Back) MUST Match The Advertised Length Of Your "Concealed Undermount" Slide.
Example:
If Using 21" Concealed Undermount Slides, Your Drawer Box Depth (Front To Back) MUST Also Be 21"

Special Consideration For "Inset" Drawer Fronts:
If Your Drawer Fronts Are "Inset", Subtract Your Drawer Front Thickness From Your Cabinet Interior Depth Then Factor For The Considerations Mentioned Above.

Be Sure The PHYSICAL/ACTUAL Slide Length Is LESS THAN Your Cabinet's Interior Depth.  If Your Cabinet's Interior Depth Is Less Than The Physical/Actual Slide Length, The Drawer Slide Will Protude Beyond The Face Of Your Cabinet.
Example 1:
Cabinet Interior Depth = 22 1/2"(22.5)
22 1/2"(22.5) Is Greater Than 21 1/2"(21.5)(Physical/Actual Length Of 21" "Concealed Undermount" Slide), But Is Less Than 24 1/2"(24.5)(Physical/Actual Length Of 24" "Concealed Undermount" Slide).
So You Would Use The 21" "Concealed Undermount" Slide & A 21" Deep (Front To Back) Drawer Box.

Example 2:
Cabinet Interior Depth = 21 3/8"(21.375)
21 3/8"(21.375) Is Less Than 21 1/2"(21.5)(Physical/Actual Length Of 21" "Concealed Undermount" Slide).  This Means The 21" "Concealed Undermout" Slide Will NOT Fit Inside The Cabinet, As It Is Too Long, And You Will Need To Drop Down To The 18" "Concealed Undermount" Slide Length.
So You Would Use The 18" "Concealed Undermount" Slide & An 18" Deep (Front To Back) Drawer Box.

Drawer Box Height
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Most Common, Modern, "Concealed Undermount" Slides Raise The Drawer Box, Off Of The Bottom Of The Opening, About 1/2"(.5) Making The Full Assembly (Slides Installed On Drawer Box) Approximately 1/2"(.5) Taller Than The Actual Drawer Box Height.
Example:
Opening Height = 5"
5" Minus 3/4"(.75) = 4 1/4"(4.25)h
(This Is The MAXIMUM Recommended Height For Your Drawer Box)
Note: QuikDrawers.com Will Do Custom Widths & Depths In 1/16"(.0625) Increments, However Our Height Options Are Limited.

To Maximize The Height Of Your Drawer Box vs. Your Opening Height:
You Would Order The Drawer Height Dimension Closest To AND Less Than Your Opening Height, Minus 3/4"(.75)
Example:
Opening Height = 5"
5" Minus 3/4"(.75) = 4 1/4"(4.25)h = 4"h Drawer Box

QuikDrawers Recommends Ordering Your Drawer Box Height, At Least, 3/4"(.75) Shorter Than Your Opening Height When Using "Concealed Undermount" Slides

NOTE ON "STACKED" DRAWER/DRAWER BASE/DRAWER BANK CABINETS:
Often, With Taller Drawer Fronts, Like On A Cabinet With "Stacked" Drawers, You Will Find The Drawer Box Is A Few Inches Shorter Than The Opening Height.
If You Do Not Want To "Fill" Your Opening Height, With The Drawer Box, And A Shorter Drawer Better Suits Your Needs, QuikDrawers Recommends Ordering Your Drawer Box A Minimum Of 3/4 Of Your Drawer Opening Height Dimension.  This Helps To Offer Support To The Drawer Front & Mitigate Potential Warpage Over Time.

Side Mount Ball Bearing Slides

Requires "Notching For Slides" : NO

Drawer Box Width
**For ANY Thickness Drawer Side Material**
(QuikDrawers "Solid Wood Dovetail Drawers" Or QuikDrawers "Baltic Birch Dovetail Drawers")
Most "Standard" Duty (Up To 100lbs Load Rating), "Full Extension Ball Bearing" Slides Require ~1/2"(.5) Of Clearance On Each Side Of The Drawer Box.
(This Is The Most Commonly Used "Full Extension Ball Bearing" Slide Type In Residential Grade Cabinetry)

So The Simple Math Is:
Subtract 1 1/16"(1.0625) From Your Cabinet Opening Width
Example:
Opening Width = 15"
15" Minus 1 1/16"(1.0625) = 13 15/16"(13.9375)w

(This Dimension Is Your Finished Drawer Box Width & The Dimension You Will Order)
(QuikDrawers Recommends Confirming The Manufacturer's Clearance Requirements For Your "Full Extension Ball Bearing" Slides.
If They Do Not Align With The Logic Above, Follow The Drawer Slide Manufacturer's Instructions)

Most "Heavy" Duty (Equal To Or Greater Than 150lbs Load Rating), "Full Extension Ball Bearing" Slides Require ~3/4"(.75) Of Clearance On Each Side Of The Drawer Box.
(This "Full Extension Ball Bearing" Slide Type Is Typically Used ONLY When The Drawer Box Is 30" Or Deeper (Front To Back) & Is VERY RARELY Used In Residential Grade Cabinetry)

So The Simple Math Is:
Subtract 1 9/16"(1.5625) From Your Cabinet Opening Width
Example:
Opening Width = 15"
15" Minus 1 9/16"(1.5625) = 13 7/16"(13.4375)w

(This Dimension Is Your Finished Drawer Box Width & The Dimension You Will Order)
(QuikDrawers Recommends Confirming The Manufacturer's Clearance Requirements For Your "Full Extension Ball Bearing" Slides.
If They Do Not Align With The Logic Above, Follow The Drawer Slide Manufacturer's Instructions)

Drawer Box Depth
Determined By Cabinet Interior Depth
IMPORTANT NOTE:

"Full Extention Ball Bearing" Slides Have No Influence On The Drawer Box Depth (Front To Back).

You Can Use A 22" Long "Full Extension Ball Bearing" Slide On A 20" Deep (Front To Back) Drawer Box, Or A 20" Long "Full Extension Ball Bearing" Slide On A 25" Deep (Front To Back) Drawer Box, Or Any Other Combination Of Slide Length vs. Drawer Box Depth (Front To Back) Configurations.
The Important Thing To Understand Is That The Drawer Box Will Only Extend Outward Equal To The Length Of The "Full Extension Ball Bearing" Slide.

Most Modern "Full Extension Ball Bearing" Slides Are Only Available In 2" Length Increments. (18", 20", 22", 24", Etc..)

To Maximize Your Drawer Box Footprint/Size:
Find Your Interior Cabinet Depth And Account For Your Slide Installation Hardware.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
If You Are Using NON-"Self Adjusting" Rear Mounting Brackets, To Install The Slides To The Cabinet Back Wall, Or Installing To Your Cabinet Interior Side Walls, Subtract 1/2"(.5) From Your Cabinet Interior Depth.
(This Dimension Is Your Finished Drawer Box Width & The Dimension You Will Order)

If You Are Using "SELF ADJUSTING" Rear Mounting Brackets, Subtract 3/4"(.75) From Your Cabinet Interior Depth.
(This Dimension Is Your Finished Drawer Box Width & The Dimension You Will Order)
QuikDrawers Recommends A Minimum 1/2"(.5) Or 3/4"(.75) (Depending On You Mounting Method/Bracket Type) Difference Between Your Cabinet Interior Depth & Your Drawer Box Depth, So That The Drawer Box Is Less Deep (Front To Back) Than The Cabinet Interior Depth And The Closed Drawer Box Does Not Hit The Back Wall Of The Cabinet.
Example:
Cabinet Interior Depth = 21 5/8"(21.625)
21 5/8"(21.625) Minus 1/2" = 21 1/8"(21.125)
Drawer Box Depth = 21 1/8"(21.125)
Slide Lenth = 20"
The 21 1/8"(21.125) Deep (Front To Back) Drawer Box Will Maximize The 21 5/8"(21.625) Cabinet Interior Depth.
But Because The Cabinet Interior Depth Is Only 21 5/8"(21.625), A 22" "Full Extension Ball Bearing" Will NOT Fit Inside The Cabinet, As It Is Too Long, And You Will Need To Drop Down To The 20" "Full Extension Ball Bearing" Slide Length.
With The 20" Long "Full Extension Ball Bearing" Slides, The 21 1/8"(21.125) Deep (Front To Back) Drawer Box Would Only Extend 20", But Would Still Offer Full Access To The Drawer Box Contents.

Special Consideration For "Inset" Drawer Fronts:
If Your Drawer Fronts Are "Inset" (Fit INSIDE The Drawer Opening), Subtract 1/2"(.5) (Or 3/4"(.75) If You Are Using "SELF ADJUSTING" Rear Mounting Brackets) From Your Cabinet Interior Depth And Then Subtract Your Drawer Front Thickness

Drawer Box Height
IMPORTANT NOTE:
With "Full Extention Ball Bearing" Slides, The Vertical Alignment, Inside The Cabinet Drawer Opening, Is Determined Directly By The Slide Installation Location, On The Side Of The Drawer Box, And Inside The Cabinet Drawer Opening.
So The "Gap/Space" Above & Below The Installed Drawer Box Is Determined, By You, And Will Allow You To Mazimize Your Drawer Box Height vs. Your Opening Height.

QuikDrawers Recommends Ordering Your Drawer Box Height, At Least, 1/4"(.25) Shorter Than Your Opening Height When Using "Full Extension Ball Bearing" Slides

To Maximize The Height Of Your Drawer Box vs. Your Opening Height:
You Would Order The Drawer Height Dimension Closest To AND Less Than Your Opening Height, Minus 1/4"(.25)
Example:
Opening Height = 5 1/4"(5.25)
5 1/4"(5.25) Minus 1/4"(.25) = 5"h
(This Is The MAXIMUM Recommended Height For Your Drawer Box)
Note: QuikDrawers.com Will Do Custom Widths & Depths In 1/16"(.0625) Increments, However Our Height Options Are Limited.

Side Mount Partial Extension Euro Style Slides

Requires "Notching For Slides" : NO

Drawer Box Width
**For ANY Thickness Drawer Side Material**
(QuikDrawers "Solid Wood Dovetail Drawers" Or QuikDrawers "Baltic Birch Dovetail Drawers")
Most "Standard" "Epoxy Euro" Slides Require ~1/2"(.5) Of Clearance On Each Side Of The Drawer Box.
(This Is The Most Commonly Used Slide Type In Manufactured Residential Grade Cabinetry)

So The Simple Math Is:
Subtract 1" From Your Cabinet Opening Width
Example:
Opening Width = 15"
15" Minus 1" = 14"w

(This Dimension Is Your Finished Drawer Box Width & The Dimension You Will Order)
(QuikDrawers Recommends Confirming The Manufacturer's Clearance Requirements For Your "Full Extension Ball Bearing" Slides.
If They Do Not Align With The Logic Above, Follow The Drawer Slide Manufacturer's Instructions)

Drawer Box Depth
Determined By Cabinet Interior Depth
IMPORTANT NOTE:

"Epoxy Euro" Slides Have Some Influence On The Drawer Box Depth (Front To Back).
This Slide Type Requires That The Drawer Box Be "Lifted" & "Tilted" To Install It Into The Opening Or Removed From The Opening.
Because Of This Installation/Removal Method, The Drawer Box Depth MUST Consider The Drawer Box Height & The "Epoxy Euro" Slide Length.

Most Modern "Epoxy Euro" Slides Are Only Available In 2" Length Increments. (16", 18", 20", 22", Etc..)

To Maximize Your Drawer Box Footprint/Size:
Find Your Interior Cabinet Depth And Account For Your Opening Height & Slide Length.

Drawer Box Width - Subtract 1 1/16" From Your Cabinet Opening Width (This Dimension Is Your Finished Drawer Width)

Drawer Box Depth - Length Of Slide Does NOT Determine Drawer Box Depth***

(***Note: Slide Length & Drawer Box Depth Most Commonly Show Drawer Box Depth 1/4" Less Than Slide Length)

(***Example: If Using 22" Epoxy Euro Slides = 21 3/4" Drawer Box Depth)

(***IMPORTANT: If Your Drawer Box Height Is Within 3/4" Of Your Cabinet Drawer Opening Height, Reduce Drawer Box Depth 1 1/2" Shorter Than Slide)

Measure Your Existing Drawer Box Or Determine Your Desired Size

  • Always use outside measurements when measuring an existing drawer.
  • If you are measuring a high back drawer, then order your custom drawer based on the "high" measurement and the normal taper will be to a 3" front height.  If you require a different height on the front, please let us know in the "comments" section of your shopping cart.
  • The "galley" scoop is 1" x 4".  If you require a special configuration, let us know.
  • Some special requests will result in a price increase.

Drawer dimensions for drawer box replacements

Determine Your Drawer Slide Type

  • Drawer slide types make a difference! Based on your selection of side mount, undermount (see below for more information) or center mount slides, you will need to size your drawer box to facilitate your slides
  • The full extension ball bearing slide and the epoxy euro slide are both side mount slides and will require 1/2" clearance between the drawer side and each of the opening sides
  • Undermount slides, such as the Vitus or Blum will require specific clearances between the drawer sides and the opening sides based on drawer material thickness. See the clearance specifications listed on the product pages for either the Vitus or Blum Undermount slides.  These slides will also require special modifications to the drawer for them to be installed.  If all else fails, call us Mon-Fri 9am to 4pm (all times central).
The slide selection should be made prior to ordering your drawers as it will affect the size ordered.

What Drawer Slides Or Hardware Should I Choose?

Blum Undermount Soft Close, Self-close Slide

  • Will not be seen on the side of the drawer when the drawer is opened
  • Offers "soft close, self-close" mechanism for smooth operation
  • Blum 563 model offers 100# static load capacity
  • Blum is available in 3" increments from 12" to 21" as standard
  • Requires special drawer construction and modifications.  This notching/boring is available when you order your pullout/rollout shelves.
  • Requires special measurements for drawer clearance
    • For 1/2" drawer material thickness, subtract 5/8" from opening width
    • For 5/8" drawer material thickness, subtract 3/8" from opening width
    • After determining drawer thickness, calculate your pullout/rollout width.  Ex. 19-1/4" (clear opening) - 3/8" (for 5/8" sides) =  18-7/8" will be the pullout/rollout width
  • Depth of pullout/rollout will be the longest slide that will fit your opening depth, to the nearest 3" length.  These slides require 1" additional to its usable length; a 21" slide requires 22" of clear depth.
  • Can be installed in either frameless or face frame cabinets (may require rear mounting bracket on face frame cabinets)

Full Extension, Ball Bearing Side Mount Slide

  • This slide is visible on the side of the pullout/rollout shelf when extended
  • Will fully extend up to its entire length when opened
  • Our 303 series has a 100# static load capactiy, exceeding most residential needs
  • Available in 2" increments from 10" to 28".
  • Does not require any special pullout/rollout construction or modification
  • Requires 1/2" clearance between the drawer and drawer opening on each side of drawer or pullout
    • Subtract a total of 1-1/16" from the clear opening
    • Calculate pullout/rollout width.  Ex. 19-1/4" (clear opening) - 1-1/16" = 18-3/16" will be the pullout/rollout width
  • Can be installed with as little height clearance as necessary to insure smooth in and out operation (3/8" recommended)
  • Can be installed in either frameless or face frame cabinets (may require rear mounting bracket on face frame cabinets)

Epoxy Euro Slide, 3/4 Extension, Side Mount Slide

  • Most common "builder grade" slide in use today
  • Is visible on the side of the pullout/rollout shelf when opened
  • Will allow for the pullout/rollout shelf to open approximately 3/4 of it length when fully extended
  • Available in 2" increments from 12" to 22"
  • Easy install
  • Requires 1/2" clearance between the drawer and drawer opening on each side of drawer or pullout
    • Subtract a total of 1" from the clear opening
    • Calculate pullout/rollout width.  Ex. 19-1/4" (clear opening) - 1" = 18-1/4" will be the pullout/rollout width
  • Can be installed in either frameless or face frame cabinets (may require rear mounting bracket on face frame cabinets)
  • If mounting slides in a face frame style cabinet, be sure to purchase slides that will reach to the rear of the cabinet where they can connect to the rear mounting bracket.  Normally, in a kitchen, you will use a 22" slide and in a bathroom, the standard would be 20"
The above information is generic and applies to MOST installations, follow mfg installation instructions if available.
